Step Aside Menurkey, Here Comes the Cleveland Turkorah

Thanksgivukkah is right around the corner, which means it’s time to bust out your turkey, your latkes and your Turkorah!

The Cleveland Turkorah (not to be confused with the menurkey) is a menorah made out of bronze and copper wire and glass beads, and is shaped to resemble a turkey. Beachwood resident Lori Cahan-Simon is responsible for creating these turkorahs.

“A friend of mine said to me, ‘Are you going to make menurkeys this year?’ And I said, “What?’ and he said, “You know, because Hanukkah and Thanksgiving coincide?’ And I said ‘Oh…yes, yes I am,'” Cahan-Simon explained while laughing.

She started making the turkorahs this past October and has about 30 orders to fill. She said it takes hours to make just one.

“It took me a really long time to figure out how to do it,” she said. “I think I made about five failed experiments before I came up with the right idea.”

Cahan-Simon said she has made wire sculptures since she was a child and has always been enamored by wire and beads. Orders for the turkorah came from all over the country, including 16 orders from the Pittsburgh chapter of Hadassah.

What does Cahan-Simon think of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah coinciding this year to create the magical day of Thanksgivukkah?

“I think it’s fun! I think the themes are appropriately mixed, much more so than Hanukkah and Christmas.”

When she’s not busy making turkorahs, Lori Cahan-Simon is a jewelry maker and a Yiddish singer. To check out her work, visit her Facebook page: www.facebook.com/lori.cahansimon.
