After debuting in Columbus in 2004, Northstar Cafe has grown throughout Central Ohio and beyond for its focus on creative, healthy and delicious menu options. The cafe in Shaker Heights, which officially opened June 1 at the Van Aken District following a soft launch, marks its Northeast Ohio entry.

“We are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the Shaker Heights community,” says Kevin Malhame, Northstar founder and CEO, in a statement to Jstyle. “The Van Aken District is such a special project. We’re really grateful to be here.”

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, plus brunch on the weekend, Northstar highlights sustainable and artisanal ingredients.

Its decor includes hardwood booths, benches, Italian leather stools, copper light fixtures and a bar that seats 24. The indoor space can accommodate 130 guests, and it has an attached patio.

Its menu boasts dishes like its popular Northstar burger – made with organic black beans, brown rice and beets – and pizzas, bowls/salads, other sandwiches and unique breakfast options. As for drinks, it serves refreshing cocktails in addition to coffee, smoothies, wine, beer and other beverages.

Malhame, who began Northstar with his brother Darren, also created Brassica, a Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant also at Van Aken and other locations in Central Ohio.
