Mark Zuckerberg’s Global Gift

Zuckerberg's AnnouncementMZuckerbergMark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, has a new venture with the goal of making the internet available to the entire world. On Aug., 20, Zuckerberg announced he will be launching internet.org, to help provide internet access to 5 billion people.

Everything Facebook has done has been about giving all people around the world the power to connect… There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy. Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges, including making internet access available to those who cannot currently afford it.”

Internet.org is a global partnership between, Facebook, Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm, and Samsung. They will have three main focus points they feel are key to bringing the two-thirds of the world, who are not yet using the internet, online. These goals include, making access affordable, using data more efficiently, and helping businesses drive access.

The response to this new initiative by Zuckerberg and partners is not yet clear. However, the top comment on their YouTube channel is in favor, the video has over 18,000 views, and 800 “thumbs up.”

Give people food, and they will eat for a day. Give them access to knowledge and information, they will learn to cultivate their minds for the betterment of the future and they will eat for a lifetime.” — LearnToThinkFree

Zuckerberg’s attempt to connect the entire world via the internet may be a noble effort… but how many more people will now be able to hack his Facebook account?
