Indonesia, Home of the World’s Largest Menorah

If you travel through the islands of Indonesia between the monkeys, awesome surf, and delicious cuisine, you can see some of the most sacred temples belonging to followers of Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. With the country being 80 percent Muslim, the temples and synagogues of the Jewish faith are not as evident throughout the continent, but they do or did exist.

On the island of Java, in the small city of Surabaya, existed a community of Sephardic Jews whose had Iraqi roots. In 1939, they built a Dutch-style synagogue named Beth Shalom. In May, locals awoke to find the Beth Shalom synagogue flattened. It was one of two in all of Indonesia.

Despite conflict, Judaism is still standing strong in Manado, Sulawesi, home of what many believe is the World’s Largest Menorah.
